England - Yorkshire Dales to Lake District

As with all the other abbeys and priories in England, Fountains Abbey was closed down and ransacked as a result of the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 by Henry VIII. They sold off the Abbey buildings and the 500 acres or more of land to the merchant, Sir Richard Gresham.
